If you are driving around on a hot day, if your car air conditioning isn’t working the consequences can actually be quite dangerous. You need to make sure that you can quickly diagnose whether or not any problems with the car aircon are issues that you can fix yourself, or problems that need the expert assistance that you can find with a qualified engineer or mechanic. For example, your car may need a proper car aircon service. You need to understand how you can best differentiate between serious concerns, and something you can deal with yourself.

The engine

This is one of the biggest issues, and it can lead to people wrongly diagnosing a problem. Your air con in the car cannot function unless the engine is on. So to collect the information that you need to ensure that you can make a correct decision about the air conditioning, you need to ensure that the engine is switched on, and with the fan speed to it’s uppermost setting. This way you can ensure that you are able to develop an accurate picture about the car aircon and whether or not it is actually working.

Listen

You need to give your air con a good listening to. If it sounds unusual in any way, then you need to consider the services of a mechanic. This is an important part of the process, and is a part that many people miss out. They see that their air con is making some strange noises and they dismiss it as nothing important. However, the noises could be indicative of a deeper problem, and could at the very least show that you need a car aircon service. It is always worthwhile taking your car down to be looked at by a professional if you hear some strange noises coming from your unit.

Pressure

This is another important point. If you can take a moment to feel the air pressure that is being released from the vents, you should be able to tell straightaway if the unit is truly in trouble, or is just playing up. If there is a drop in air pressure or if it is intermittent and not blowing a consistent amount of air, then there is a need to get a mechanic to take a good look at it.

The smells

Finally, smell the air that is coming out of the unit. It may be that some unpleasant odours are being emitted. If this is the case, there is a good chance that the unit has been filled up with bacteria and fungal matter. This means that it needs cleaning out, and this is something that you cannot do.

Always consider the above when taking a look at your car aircon unit. It is important to not jump to conclusions, and to remember that you are in no way qualified (or legally allowed) to make any alterations or changes to your  car aircon unit. Take it to an expert if it needs any work done.
